Double O’s (Orlando)

It all begins with an idea.

I noticed the drive-thru sign with the frigate bird heading east on Colonial; weeks later, I headed back west, migrated back if you will. Some cling vinyl in the window, a neon twist on Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, does catch your eye, but it comes down to the time and if you trust that beyond a girthy sidewalk, a window awaits. A turn in takes you down a path with a “DO NOT ENTER” sign, several cars, and a themed menu screen in the distance. There’s isn’t much more to it. You wait patiently behind the pink ranger Toyota C-HR, until you make it to the screen with a happy, unconcerned voice and continue on past the “STAY GROUNDED” mural patch, a bouncy and blocked episode of the frigate bird’s epic. “GIRL,” followed by the flapping of hands and the shadow of backseat puppy ears precursed our trip to the window. And, with a few extra decaf clicks on the Eversys, a second to savor the summery stickers through some dried drips on the order window, and a whip cream confirmation, we were migrating back north in what seemed like no time at all.

Drink: Large Iced Tortuga

It doesn’t land on hot/cold chocolate or mocha. That’s normally how I base my review of a coffee drink with chocolate. It probably has something to do with the array of flavors added: mocha, hazelnut, caramel, AND cinnamon powder. I’d imagine that just a mocha would come off as a cold chocolate beverage, but someone in the car with me got the mocha and said that it tasted too much like coffee...interesting. Those four shots, baby. Honestly, it does have some coffee flavor, but the drink doesn’t fully commit to anything. It’s not the sweetest, yet it is pretty sweet. Something about the espresso peeks through enough to make the whipped cream and caramel-chocolate drizzle (which my father breathlessly remarked was “so pretty”) a welcome layer to dip through and playful lick off the straw. I wouldn’t get it again, but I wouldn’t knock anyone who treats themselves to this kind of coffee-forward sweet treat.

There might be WIFI—they have networks when you’re hanging out in your car—but there isn’t any password on the menu or anything. You might have to ask at the window and then you’re rewarded during future line waits. But, with about 4 people running around inside, the line moves extremely quickly. You might never even get a chance to use it if you’re jamming out to a song too hard...not much of a loss.

MOVED: Retro Roast

It all begins with an idea.

UPDATE 3/23/2024: They announced on March 22, 2024 that they are moving to Thornton Park in early April!

Click right to take a look around…

After parking in the back, a chalkboard-style A-frame will direct you: SEATING or ENTER. We opted for enter, passing through the threshold that had a painted wood plank above, entitling the destination “MARKET ON SOUTH.” At this point, you may feel like all you’ve been getting is mixed signals. But, as an Orlando native, allow me to reassure you that what you are in fact getting are unfamiliar transmissions, ones that Central Floridians easily synthesize. This space has housed so many greats over the years (many of which I have had the good fortune of visiting). From Valhalla to Dixie Dharma, it’s the vegan version of a Vegas residency. The ceiling is high, not vaulted but much closer to the sky. Rather than simply letting it tower over glass door merchandisers—the KOOL-IT was the only one stocked with anything (ciders, beers, sodas, and whatnot)—an imaginative sort chose to stack old, antique steamer traveling trunks on top of these temperature-controlled displays and pale wood shelving that popped against the inky olive walls. The craziest part is this closed multi-ruched, dark teal curtail in the back that encircles an area between more stacked trunks and retro TV screens, viewable by way of open window shutters.

“Wizard of Oz,” the person I was with asked.

My mind thought of Zoltar. Both I could merit, but the only real answer is hinted at by where the curtains where the ends don’t quite meet. This glimpse offers a painting of a man with a wide brimmed black hat—a portrait like that of a 17th-century, Spanish nobleman. The palm leaf fans are going, the lasered wood oval, hexagon, circle, and vintage-mic-and-then-some medallions along the main counter wall announce that Vegan Scoops, CLEAVER, RETRO ROAST, and MAIN HOUSE MARKET are operating in some capacity, and joy is desultorily mixed—with decisions to be made among too many delicious options and dashed hopes matching the dashed state of many menu items. I suspect that, for many, we might be back to that mixed signal, feeling that jamming once more. The worst thing you can do is fight it. The best thing you can do is pay your respects to the mysteries—giggle at the banana safety cone if you’d like, for comfort—and roll with it.

Drink: Iced Cashew Milk Peppermint Mocha

“You can keep the jar,” the effortless soul (that had gotten coolly excited over cashew milk) said as she placed the drink on the pastry case glass.

Oh, it was pretty. So pretty in fact that I began spontaneously thanking her for various aspects of the drink. I didn’t want a conversation, I just really liked it all (the straw, the jar…everything) that much. As a jumping off point, here is the drink’s description: “A holiday classic topped with house whip cream, chocolate chips and candy cane bits. Available in white mocha.” At first, I didn’t pay this drink any mind. For one thing, it was crossed off in magenta dry-erase marker. For another, I don’t like peppermint. However, after finding out that they didn’t have any more cardamom rose syrup and that they’d just made a fresh batch of peppermint syrup, everything I thought about peppermint seemed to go straight out the window. I asked if I could get it regular mocha and iced—after an oh-so-fun conversation with the guy behind the counter about his cookie butter masterpiece he’d concocted, the evidence of which sat on the counter—and dove in. I was up in the air between coconut and macadamia nut milk when cashew milk was thrown into the mix by that soul I’ve already mentioned who came out of the kitchen at the perfect moment to confirm the state of the syrups. I asked.

“Definitely cashew.”

I mentioned that whipped cream would be fine because I wasn’t vegan, but she waved me off while making her way over to the decent espresso machine. Everything’s vegan. Good to know. The presentation: A+. The drink: delicious and balanced, almost absent of peppermint flavor. Peppermint can be strong. Here though, it isn’t, and if you really like the flavor (and get your drink with cashew milk, iced, and regular mocha), I’d go ahead and request an extra pump if they’ll give it. I’ve never had a menu item uncrossed off for me before...but it felt good to grab something festive, flavorful, and first after restock. Feels good.

Foxtail Coffee (SoDo North)

It all begins with an idea.

Click right to take a look around…

Make sure you turn onto the right street, otherwise enjoy the teacup ride in your car. When you do park next to a palm tree and head inside, you get the spaciousness that is almost a hallmark of Foxtail’s “farmhouse” feel. The soil-stained bike frame, with its ajar tire and rusted handlebars, along with stools either pushed in over floor-running pipes or fully framed with repurposed steel pulleys reinforce the auto-garage size and feel. There are less pointed elements. The Christmas soundtrack was working for its residency, from “Christmasland” by Tony Bennett (RIP) to Frank Sinatra’s “Mistletoe and Holly.” Of course, this music wouldn’t be a year-round character, but the decision to air it and the ease of catching each tune means that someone chooses the playlist (to match the time of year and not the barn garage moment) and music is meant to be a part of the moment, not fully engulfed by the background. And a block-letter “FOXTAIL” decal stuck on the ordering counter’s white tile back splash, rotated 90 degrees, along with less harmonious chairs and tables in the room’s center ensure that theme isn’t simply an overplayed hand. The shelving behind the counter, speckled with home goods store galore, but what stuck out to me were the pride flags that lightly jostled with each draft. It’s not everyday that plaid and bronze pans brings out the colors of lgbtqia+, genderfluid, and lesbian pride. And, with space to stretch out and a peaceful place to play—how do YOU think a giraffe would wear a tie?—it doesn’t seek to be singular, but there’s something considerable about this rustic vivarium.

Drink: French Press - Single Origins - Honduras

I got the choice of whether I wanted to take this coffee in a mug. My suspicion is that the alternative was a take-away cup, so I went for it. Can always change later. The mug is enormous, definitely 16 oz. or more, and this makes it gratifying to hold. But, its mass is all white, giving the sanitary feeling of a space suit—so much white with a brownish-black break in its bulk. I’ve been reading a lot about the importance of coffee cups lately, and I think it shows...anyways, the coffee itself was made by an unidentifiable, all metal French press (I checked with the barista, and we both laughed at not being able to find the brand name), and it tasted flat. Don’t get me wrong, it tasted like coffee. However, all of the flavors I was expecting—stone fruit like cherries and notes of chocolate—all tasted submerged. I decided to look at the notes of this medium roast coffee: dark chocolate, almond, cherry. THERE was the toasted flavor and the clarified mouthfeel: almond and dark chocolate. It certainly isn’t unpleasant, but you won’t be chugging it down. It’s a coffee-drinking experience that feels like your tongue sinking its toes into the sand...don’t even try to ask me what that means.

Krispy Kreme (Millenia)

It all begins with an idea.

Click right to take a look around…

Finding entry on the side of the shop, I swore I saw a line through the windows. No, I DID see a line through the windows. It was scattered, a mix of pick-up orders hovering—presumably waiting for something more—and children hollering back to parents in Spanish from the donut case. What I soon realized was that not only was it a Saturday but also Orlando City was playing.

“It’s 4:31, we got time,” a guy in purple merchandise said, approaching his Og-like friend preceding me in line.

A ready face emerged over the counter. We both looked at each other and hesitated due to the mother and daughter in front of me. After a few seconds of that, we shrugged together, and I ordered. Oh yes, if you take a seat at the foam green chairs and couches (which are super comfy) you’ll bear witness to (and might get caught in the crossfire’s of) the two boys in hats playing cops and robbers around the ground coffee display. You might even consider a game of hat stacking as the girl in yellow, from which popped flowers, did next to me. But, what is astounding (and why I have rated this spot a 5/5) is the spirit of the workers. Whatever pep talk the manager gave them in the morning worked. From the older woman’s overuse of the word “sunshine” (“$9.60, sunshine,” “What can I do for you, sunshine,” etc.) to the proud mention of the hot-off-the-belt original also in my donut bag (so that’s where she went before coming back to the register), it was a chord hit with an unexpected perfection. When the register acted up, the big-eyed beauty didn’t skip a beat.

“It’s senile,” she said as I hovered.

“Tell me a story about your week,” she continued, and the computer came back to life.

She wished me an incredible day, and I gestured to the donut, voicing my certainty that it would be. But, what does incredible require? I’m inclined to say two donuts in one hand, a coffee in the other, and a hair-netted, effortless life force.

Drink: New Classic Brewed Coffee

They actually advertise it, which is nice. Always so solid. The y brew something that is generally appeasing (like diner coffee) but a hair better than that (like they learned in a coffee culture). Out of curiosity, I employed Google. North Carolina. Well, leave that hypothesis out. It’s nothing to sneeze about on its own, but it needn’t be. Not burnt, not watered down, it is what it must be and that is all.

Food: Pumpkin Spice Maple Pecan Donut

See, this is what I love about Krispy Kreme: they didn’t just slap maple frosting on a glazed donut. The donut was brown—spiced—and topped with a rich maple frosting, less characterized by peaks and more by glaze. The praline are such a nice touch (but eat over something, they will fall off, and you’ll mourn their loss). It went so quickly. I was both grateful and distraught over the second donut. The original glazed curbed the loss, but it just wasn’t nearly as special.

CFS (Kirkman)

It all begins with an idea.

Click right to take a look around…

At the Mall at Millenia’s Best Buy forty minutes before it opened (a story for another time) with nothing to do. This spot down the road was ideal. My father, this morning’s partner in crime, loves the Winter Park location of this chain. Even before finding the strip mall of Kirkman Shoppes, we knew what we had an idea of what we were getting ourselves into. This time though, rather than the quiet Hannibal Square, this “Coffee for the Soul”—a phrase printed on its outside awning and announced on the interior’s longest wall—is among a capitalist cacophony of Pinch-a-Penny, AT&T, H&R Block, Chick-fil-A, and others. Nevertheless, this Colombian current offers a lot of play (after ordering, my father picked up the 100 Flowers ADULT COLORING BOOK on the table in the seating nook almost immediately), sans the often-found disarray. There are flowers painted on the counter’s backdrop, fake vines woven into a partition trellis (CAUTION: it’s on wheels. Don’t lean back like my father did.), and the most epic wall painting of a coffee plant emerging gloriously from a portafilter, but it doesn’t lean too heavily on some cliched plant decor, admittedly an ironic breath of fresh air. With some  layout feature’s requiring modification—ignoring the bad cover of Passenger’sLet Her Go”—this cafe admirably fits the seaside Colombian vibe into an unlikely place. On a wood-planked backdrop are the native masks and Botero mini-canvasses I’ve come to associate with the chain. However, here these elements emphasize a statement: “There’s coffee and then there’s Colombian coffee.” Herein lies the differentiation, perfectly noticed by my father as well. “No now clock,” he remarked, referring to the handless clock at the flagship in Winter Park. Now, later, past, present, it doesn’t matter. Sailing through the day, landing at the CFS means coffee time.

Drink: Iced Latte

It is rare that you will catch me ordering a latte—let alone an iced latte—but the day I ended up in this CFS location felt a little different. I’ve been to the location in Winter Park so many times and have tried almost everything on the menu. This cafe staple, however, has always alluded me. Another important thing about CFS: the coffee flavor is much too tame for me. This mild flavor is why my father always enjoys his drinks here and why I always land a bit dissatisfied. The iced latte situation was no different. Despite having two espresso shots, the iced latte tasted like tinged milk. Mind you, it might be that the milk quality overpowers the espresso quality. But, I know nothing about dairy, so I won’t pretend to assert any knowledge here. Because the espresso flavor is so drowned out, I don’t consider this a good iced latte. It does get better as you go along, and it is drinkable. I’d personally (if you enjoy a prominent coffee taste) avoid this drink and go for something without/with less dairy or a special like the forever-fun rainbow latte.

Food: Vegan Breakfast Sandwich

When it came out, which took an oddly long time, it was beautifully plated. Cut along a diagonal and sprinkled with parsley, you could easily admire the layers of house-made lentil burger, spinach, onions, tomatoes, carrots and avocado. While visually appealing, it was an oddly plain sandwich. It is CFS, so not to worry: Cholula is one of their condiment cart staples. Concluding the flavor conversation, for listing “toasted multigrain bread,” I expected something a little heartier. If it was multigrain, it only just barely qualified. Where it lands? I’d go ahead and try something else. The yucca waffles looked bomb...

Juan Valdez Café (Winter Park)

It all begins with an idea.

Click right to take a look around…

From the condiment cart, the patron saint Juan Valdez presides over the room’s happenings as he does in over 500 cafes around the world. While maybe not from this specific location in every cafe, this cafetero is always somehow present. I’ll be honest, this place is a little more special to me than most. When the notice went up that this chain was going to be added to Lakeside and Lakeside Crossing, I lived within a stone’s throw of the place. It finally opened...after I sold that apartment. But enough about my oddly parental feelings. It’s one of those places that creates its own character without feeling forced. A bright, tangerine wall—with one extra dimension to fit some shelving and five screens with menus and marketing—draws you to the counter while below heavily contrasting black-and-white arte porcelain tiles spill out and achieves much the same. Typical messaging and imagery occupy what little wall space there is, but the key message, “The coffee from the Columbian coffee growers,” is on the orange, popping off the vibrant color with a few more gains from the tiling and counter beneath it. It’s a cafe that lands along the same plane as its many counterparts. However, thank cafetero for the counter’s tropical drama.

Drink: Small Iced Soy Mocha

My mom got the whole milk, decaf version, so I thought getting the caffeinated, non-dairy version would be a cute match. Originally I ordered it with coconut milk, but they said they didn’t have that. I can’t be sure if it was a misprint on the menu on the screen or if they ran out. It’s of no consequence either way—I just probably would have opted for hot instead. Given the fact that it is made with Volcan, their strong blend with sweet caramel and cocoa tasting notes, it is seamless. I couldn’t even taste the change to soy. It might seem laughable, but it reminded me of Stardust just down the road. And, this is what I mean by this comment: the result—from the cocoa and the sweet of the caramel—is more of a sweet coffee beverage not a mocha. My mom even alluded to this with a passing comment: “There are certain places that I just really like the mocha syrup.” She likes the spots where the mocha syrup doesn’t blend but defines.

Divicious Deli & Coffee Shop

Get me those guava pastelitos on drip. Okay, so these classic Latin pastries weren’t on drip, but they were cooling on the drip coffee machine. And, despite all the other quirks and disorganized imagery, this unintentional ornament at eye-level was visualized tonada. It’s a lunchtime cafe with a bodega build, a whopping three different granite styles characterizing counter tops. Should it not be so for three different purposes? One to order at and hold a plastic case crammed with croissants and more pastelitos, one to pull up a stool to and nosh at, and one more to hold the straws and equal? It’s just that kind of place: the wearer of many different gorras. “SORRY, NO DRINKS REFILLS” the menu reads right under coffee’s secondary announcement of whipped cream on their hot latte, frozenccino, and cocoa. And, not two feet away from that notice is a collage of police patches with a dry-erase board beneath it, minimally relaying today’s special coffee flavor: “Chocolate kiss 😚.” Blend in some coffee drollery—boards, canvases, and general store knickknacks—and whether waiting by the bathroom to take your food and go or nabbing one of the three tables for your lunch hour, it’s flavor to the very outer edges....much like their pastelitos.

Drink: Divicious (Dulce de Leche) Frozenccino

I cannot resist a drink named after the cafe I’m in. If it is deemed so worthy, I must try it. Of course, it’s a dulce de leche flavor. When it comes to dulce de leche, I only trust a Latin spot. This rendition is the appropriate Cuban concentration, a feat in a frozen drink. They got the overall flavor, including this Cuban character, just right. In the car, a conversation took hold about the disappointment of weak drinks (see Extra Notes). This frozen item was anything but. My favorite part of the drink though had to be the whipped cream. Why? Well, with no intention of seeking out whipped cream, they asked me during my order whether I wanted it. I decided to go all in. A few minutes had gone by, the drinks were in progress, and a woman behind the counter rushed out the door. Moments later, I saw her from my seat at the window quickly round the corner and walk back in...whipped cream in hand. She must’ve had to run over to the neighboring Bodega Market to pick up some more for my drink. They didn’t have to offer the whipped cream if they didn’t have any. But, simply the commitment to getting this signature out the way it’s intended—and the in-a-pinch solution of visiting the guys next door—warmed my heart despite the sips of frozen dulce-de-leche-infused coffee.

Stasio's Italian Deli & Market

The full update from 3/30/22 is below, but I wanted to note seperatley that—on this second visit—I also tried the WIFI, and it works perfectly.

UPDATE 3/30/22: Legitimately went back a week later. Yes, that happened. The girl who rarely walks over a coffee threshold twice went back a week later. There was just so much more deliciousness to be had.

Rainbow cookie cheesecake (you read that right)=$5.95 (charged as “FLAVOR CHEESECAKE”)

  • A picture of this beauty *cueThing of Beauty” by Danger Twins* can be found below. I try to avoid dessert fusions, not because of any love lost, but because it can get a little out of control extremely quickly. Cronuts, cruffins, birthday cake ice cream—best not to even get me started on the lattes (pumpkin pie, baklava, apple pie, cinnamon bun, etc.)—pepper the dessert landscape with overly sweet, catastrophic concoctions. But, when I saw this slice in the case, I had to try this dessert mashup. Rainbow cookie bits and flavors swirled into a thick-but-light Italian cheesecake was something I never thought I needed. It wasn’t too sweet, and it wasn’t ill-proportioned—more cheesecake than marzipan cookie or vice versa. I told my dad it would be three desserts (it was heavy). I cut it in half and managed two…

S B=$1.89

  • Last time I stopped in, the woman behind the counter really just identified the espresso options. This time, the other woman at the front listed the drink options out for me. And, lo and behold, drip coffee made the list. I’d give the espresso machine a break…this time. As far as the flavor, the size, the temperature—it receives praise. This laudation doesn’t even take into account other factors like how swiftly it appeared in front of me, the price, and the pour. I have no idea how it would be in the afternoon. But, for what I can say at 8 a.m., it hit the spot. It wasn’t bitter or burnt; it had the ruggedness of a mom-and-pop shop product without being lazy or grimy. I enjoyed sip after sip, and yet it lasted me until 2 p.m. Although I can’t speak to whether they also use FORZA here, I can say that this option isn’t just an American ruse. It’s the real deal, and I can’t appreciate it enough.

Pepper and egg sandwich=$6 (One with cheese=$1)

  • Packed with eggs and peppers, it comes on a dazzling poppyseed dusted roll. My father got this last time, and the surprised look we shared when he turned it to me so that I could see its contents is still etched in my memory. Everything comes together so unbelievably neatly. The eggs, fried with an almost (almost) excessive amount of peppers, makes for a beautiful and sustaining sandwich. I do prefer a bit more flavor, so I did add some red pepper flakes and some hot sauce when I got home, but all in all a worthwhile breakfast. The bun itself—my dad tore at it a little while he ate—is such a fun, perfect departure from your normal sliced bread or generic bread bun. It’s more like challah and twisted at the top. When (not if) I go back, I’ll probably revert back to the Melenzani because nothing competes with heaven on Earth.

Latte=$3.50

UPDATE 12/5/22: L (w/ almond milk) – my dad dared me—not with his words, but with his actions. So, I asked what other milks they had. Your choices are almond or whole milk. Why does that feel so appropriate? Anyways, the moment of truth. This drink made me happy, so so happy. I forgot about the way that espresso works here. And, while that surprise would have been enough, the gratitude was for the almond milk. It wasn’t burnt; it wasn’t dismantled; it was the stick figure of almond milks: resembling, sincere, and heartwarming. I may end up getting this latte again. Those words are a rarity.
