Double O’s (Orlando)

I noticed the drive-thru sign with the frigate bird heading east on Colonial; weeks later, I headed back west, migrated back if you will. Some cling vinyl in the window, a neon twist on Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, does catch your eye, but it comes down to the time and if you trust that beyond a girthy sidewalk, a window awaits. A turn in takes you down a path with a “DO NOT ENTER” sign, several cars, and a themed menu screen in the distance. There’s isn’t much more to it. You wait patiently behind the pink ranger Toyota C-HR, until you make it to the screen with a happy, unconcerned voice and continue on past the “STAY GROUNDED” mural patch, a bouncy and blocked episode of the frigate bird’s epic. “GIRL,” followed by the flapping of hands and the shadow of backseat puppy ears precursed our trip to the window. And, with a few extra decaf clicks on the Eversys, a second to savor the summery stickers through some dried drips on the order window, and a whip cream confirmation, we were migrating back north in what seemed like no time at all.

Drink: Large Iced Tortuga
It doesn’t land on hot/cold chocolate or mocha. That’s normally how I base my review of a coffee drink with chocolate. It probably has something to do with the array of flavors added: mocha, hazelnut, caramel, AND cinnamon powder. I’d imagine that just a mocha would come off as a cold chocolate beverage, but someone in the car with me got the mocha and said that it tasted too much like coffee...interesting. Those four shots, baby. Honestly, it does have some coffee flavor, but the drink doesn’t fully commit to anything. It’s not the sweetest, yet it is pretty sweet. Something about the espresso peeks through enough to make the whipped cream and caramel-chocolate drizzle (which my father breathlessly remarked was “so pretty”) a welcome layer to dip through and playful lick off the straw. I wouldn’t get it again, but I wouldn’t knock anyone who treats themselves to this kind of coffee-forward sweet treat.

Price*: Large Iced Tortuga=$6.10
*They were having a special on Friday, December 22: all drinks for $1 (except there is a charge for alternative milks they don’t mention).
Hours: Everyday {6–13}
Extra Notes:
There might be WIFI—they have networks when you’re hanging out in your car—but there isn’t any password on the menu or anything. You might have to ask at the window and then you’re rewarded during future line waits. But, with about 4 people running around inside, the line moves extremely quickly. You might never even get a chance to use it if you’re jamming out to a song too hard...not much of a loss.
